Gamma Radiation Source

A gamma radiation source is a device that emits high-energy gamma rays. These are used in material testing to inspect metals and detect nonconformities.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

Gamma rays are high-energy electromagnetic waves with short wavelengths. They can be absorbed by atomic electrons, leading to the emission of characteristic X-rays.

Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding

Gamma radiation is used in material testing to analyze the structure and properties of metals. It can help detect nonconformities such as cracks or impurities. However, exposure to gamma radiation is harmful to health and must therefore be strictly controlled.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

When using a gamma radiation source, safety measures must be followed, such as wearing protective clothing and keeping a safe distance. Testing should be carried out by qualified technicians to ensure results are interpreted correctly.
