Gamma titanium aluminide
An intermetallic phase based on titanium-aluminum featuring low density and high elevated-temperature strength. It is engineered for rotating components in modern aircraft engines.
Gamma titanium aluminide is a tricky material to weld. The issue is that it cracks and loses strength when cooled too fast or with improper heat management. You have to cool the weld extremely slowly and in a controlled manner, best right after welding by placing it in a preheated bed. In practice, forget normal arc welding, that won't work. You need a focused, high-energy beam like laser or electron beam to keep the heat input small. And you must prepare the parts cleanly beforehand, otherwise you have no chance of a sound weld.
