Gas-Cooled Welding Torch
A gas-cooled welding torch dissipates thermal energy through flowing shielding gas, which reduces surface hardness and extends torch life. Typically used at lower current levels.
Physical-chemical mechanism
A gas-cooled welding torch uses the flowing shielding gas to remove the thermal load from the torch. The gas absorbs the heat transfer and carries it away, keeping the torch surface cooler.
Metallurgical relevance & risks in welding
Cooling by the shielding gas prevents the torch from heating up too quickly. This reduces the hardness and resistance of the surface, allowing for a longer torch life. Without gas cooling, the torch can overheat quickly, leading to rapid wear and possibly a fire hazard.
Workshop practice & instructions
Use gas-cooled welding torches at lower current levels. Ensure that the shielding gas is flowing constantly and the correct amount is used. Regularly check the torch for wear and adjust the gas flow regulator accordingly.
