Gas Post-Flow Time

Post-flow time is the time during which shielding gas continues to flow after the arc is extinguished. It protects the cooling tungsten electrode and the weld from oxidation.

Physicochemical Mechanism of Action

After the arc is extinguished, residual heat remains, keeping the tungsten electrode and the weld hot. Without post-flow time, this heat would cause oxidation.

Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding

A too short post-flow time (less than 10 seconds) can cause the tungsten electrode and the weld to oxidize. This can lead to corrosion and material loss. A too long post-flow time (more than 30 seconds) wastes gas and slows down the process.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

Set the post-flow time to at least 10 seconds, but no longer than 30 seconds. This ensures effective oxidation prevention without unnecessary shielding gas consumption.
