Gas Porosity from Powder Moisture
Gas porosity is caused by moisture in the powder, which leads to evaporating gases and forms spherical voids. Dry storage is essential.
Physicochemical Mechanism of Action
Moisture in the powder turns into gases (e.g., water vapor) at elevated temperatures and expands. These gases are adsorbed on the surface of metal particles and can evaporate during welding, forming spherical voids in the component.
Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding
Gas porosity leads to weak spots in the material, which can cause cracks under mechanical stress. The component's lifespan is reduced and its toughness impaired.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
Ensure the powder is stored dry (below 20% humidity). Use a fine-tuned drying unit before welding. Regularly check the moisture content of the powder and ensure correct storage.
