Oxy-Fuel Gas Welding
Oxyfuel gas welding uses acetylene-oxygen gas to melt metals. It is slower than arc processes.
Physical-chemical mechanism of action
The acetylene-oxygen mixture burns and gives off heat that melts the workpiece. The combustion occurs in several steps: first acetylene burns with oxygen to CO2 and hydrogen (H2), then the H2 reacts with more oxygen to form water vapor.
Metallurgical relevance & risks in welding
The slow process speed can lead to distortion if the workpieces are not properly guided. There is also a risk of porosity due to insufficient deoxidation. Additionally, acetylene can be dangerous as it is explosive.
Workshop practice & instructions for use
Use a closed welding shield and pay attention to the correct gas ratios. Keep the combustion channel clean and run the process in a shielded area. Avoid strong drafts as they can cause uneven melting.
