Microstructural Anisotropy

Microstructural anisotropy is the directional alignment of microstructural constituents, resulting in different mechanical properties in different directions.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

Microstructural anisotropy arises from the unequal orientation of crystal structure or grain in a metal. This directional alignment can occur during melting, cooling, or deformation.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

Anisotropy leads to different mechanical properties such as hardness and ductility in different directions. This can cause uneven stress distribution and potential cracks or wear under mechanical load.

Workshop Practice & Action Guidelines

To minimize anisotropy, ensure uniform cooling and adequate post-weld treatment. Use mechanical methods if needed to balance grain direction.
