Microstructural defect

Microstructure defects are local irregularities in the metal, such as voids or dislocations. They impair formability and fracture behavior.

Physicochemical mechanism of action

Microstructure defects arise from incomplete phase formation, voids, or dislocations on a micro level. These can occur during the melting phase, during cooling, or due to mechanical stress.

Metallurgical relevance & risks in welding

Microstructure defects lead to reduced toughness and increased fracture probability. They can also serve as sources for cracks or hot cracks, especially when they occur in critical load areas.

Workshop practice & action instructions

Avoid microstructure defects by adhering to correct welding parameters (e.g., proper cooling steps). For existing defects, fine machining or a special treatment such as TIG welding can help improve stability.
