Microstructure-Inherited Strengthening
Inherent microstructural strengthening increases mechanical resistance through fine grain boundaries and high dislocation densities. This improves strength and toughness of the material.
Physical-chemical mechanism
Inherent microstructural strengthening arises from the microscopic structure of the metal, particularly fine grain boundary networks and a high density of dislocation molecules. These structures prevent plastic flow and ensure higher mechanical properties.
Metallurgical relevance & risks in welding
Insufficient inherent microstructural strengthening can reduce material strength, leading to cracks and failure. It is important that the weld structure is shaped to exhibit the required mechanical properties.
Workshop practice & instructions
To achieve good inherent microstructural strengthening, the melting process must be carefully controlled. This includes correct selection of the welding process, proper temperature and time for cooling, and the use of suitable deoxidizers. For steels, it is especially important that carbon content and cooling process are optimally set to produce a homogeneous structure.
