Backing pass

A subsequently deposited weld bead at the joint root after previous back-gouging, ensuring complete penetration and quality improvement.

The backing run is the first weld bead on the root of the seam that you lay after gouging. This secures the root and prevents sagging or porosity during further welding. If you lay the backing run clean and tight, you'll have less trouble with the seam later. The exact settings depend on material and position, so you need to develop a feel for it.
