Back-gouging and sealing run
Back gouging and welding is working the root from the back side and then rewelding to achieve a defect-free full penetration. It prevents lack of fusion in critical pressure vessels.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
Back gouging and welding works the root from the back side, allowing welding from the inside out. This prevents air or other substances from entering the weld and causing lack of fusion.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
Without back gouging and welding, air infiltration and lack of fusion can occur in the weld, which can lead to pressure loss or cracks. This is especially dangerous in critical pressure vessels.
Shop Practice & Instructions
1. Prepare the root from the back side.
2. Start welding from the inside out.
3. Use a shielded gas supply to protect the welding area.
4. Ensure no air or other substances enter the weld.
