Backstep welding sequence
A sequence technique where welding progresses in opposite directions to balance thermal expansion and contraction across the component.
Backstep welding is what you do when you want to keep distortion small on long welds. Instead of burning from one end to the other, two welders start in the middle and work outward. The shrinkage of one bead then counteracts the other, and the part stays straight. It's important that both sides work truly simultaneously and with identical settings. If one is faster or runs more current, things go crooked and you get stresses or cracks. Meet cleanly in the middle, otherwise you'll have an uncontrolled shrinkage zone there.
