Slip bands

Persistent slip bands are localized plastic deformations on the surface of metals under cyclic loading that can lead to fatigue cracks.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

Persistent slip bands form due to repeated loading and plastic deformation on metal surfaces. These local deformations develop into layers that extend parallel to the load movement.

Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding

Persistent slip bands can lead to fatigue cracks, especially if not fully removed. These cracks can cause catastrophic failure under further loading and significantly reduce component life.

Workshop Practice & Action Instructions

To avoid persistent slip bands, clean metals thoroughly before welding. When working with cyclically loaded parts, carefully control the load and remove deformations as needed.
