Equiaxed Cast Structure
Globular cast structure consists of round grains that form uniformly in all directions. It leads to homogeneous material properties and improves toughness.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
In the casting process, metal particles condense into round grains that grow uniformly in all spatial directions. This uniform growth results in a homogeneous and isotropic structure.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
Globular cast structure has high toughness and improves the mechanical properties of the component. If handled incorrectly during welding, the structure can be coarsened, reducing toughness and promoting cracks.
Workshop Practice & Action Instructions
To maintain a globular cast structure, it is important to ensure controlled cooling of the melt. This can be achieved by using cooling water or special cooling dies. During welding, care must be taken that the weld does not cool too quickly (t8/5 > 25 s) to coarsen the structure and avoid cracks.
