Annealing

Heat treatment process in which a material is heated to a specific temperature, held there, and then cooled controlled to reduce internal stresses and improve formability.

When annealing, heat the workpiece evenly to the right temperature and then let it cool slowly. This relieves internal stresses that occurred during welding or previous machining. The material becomes softer and easier to work with. If you cool too fast or get too hot, the structure can be damaged and the part becomes brittle or warps. So: heat cleanly, hold the time, and let it cool slowly in the furnace or in ashes.
