Gray Value Evaluation in Digital Radiography
Gray value evaluation in digital radiography measures the intensity of X-rays via pixel gray values to detect density differences and material inhomogeneities.
Physicochemical mechanism of action
Grayscale analysis in digital radiography is based on the principle that X-rays are absorbed to different degrees by different materials. Dense areas absorb more radiation and thus produce darker pixels (low gray values), while less dense areas absorb less radiation and produce bright pixels (high gray values).
Metallurgical relevance & welding risks
This method is used in the workshop to check weld quality. It helps detect pores, cracks, and other defects by visually representing density differences. Incorrect interpretation or technical problems with the measuring device can lead to missing or falsified results, which poses risks to component safety.
Workshop practice & instructions
To perform accurate grayscale analysis, the X-ray device should be correctly calibrated and in perfect working order. Imaging should be done under constant conditions to ensure comparability. The images are then analyzed by looking at the gray values and finding deviations from the normal structure.
