Renewal of Welder Qualification

Extension of validity for welder qualification is the extension of the testing period after a welder has successfully passed a test. This is done through regular evidence and checks.

Physico-Chemical Mechanism of Action

The validity extension of the welder qualification is based on the specified time period during which the welder's skills are recognized as stable and continuously error-free. This period can be extended through regular proof and checks.

Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding

The extension of the qualification has no direct metallurgical impact on the microstructure or properties of the welded steel. However, it is crucial for the safety and quality of the work, as a welder with a valid qualification applies safe and correct procedures. An uncontrolled period or one that is too long can lead to a reacquisition of skills and increase potential errors.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

To perform the extension of the welder qualification, the following steps must be taken:

1. Regular proof: The responsible welding engineer must regularly (e.g., every 6 months) check and document the welder's skills.

2. Carry out checks: By testing sample welds or by redoing a full test, the state of the skills can be checked.

3. Documentation: All proof and checks must be thoroughly documented to get an overview of the welder's skill development.

4. Extension of the period: If all requirements are met, the test period can be extended and the expiry date updated.
