Micro-Range Hardness Testing
The micro-hardness test measures the local hardness of metal sections under microscopic resolution. It detects structural inhomogeneities, carbides, and precipitates.
Physical-Chemical Working Principle
The micro-hardness test uses a microscopic load range to measure the local hardness of metal sections. A very small force is applied that plastically deforms the material and determines its hardness.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
This test is especially important for metals with complex structures or high carbon content. It can detect local weaknesses, such as carbide precipitates or uneven hardness distribution. These can lead to cracks or damage if not corrected.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
To test hardness in the micro range, a microscopic load range is used. The force should be between 1 and 5 millinewtons. The measurement is done under a high-resolution microscope. For uneven results, the metal sections should be further examined or adjusted to avoid cracks or damage.
