Hardness conversion

Hardness conversion is the conversion of hardness values from one test method to another using tables. It only gives approximate values since it's material-dependent.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism

Hardness conversion relies on comparing different hardness scales through mathematical formulas. Each material has a unique hardness curve, measured with specific testing methods.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

Wrong hardness conversion can lead to inaccurate assessments of mechanical properties. This can present risks in service, as the actual hardness may be above or below the expected value. Cracks or low toughness could result.

Workshop Practice & Action Points

Always use the correct conversion table for the specific material and test method. Pay attention to exact values and temperature conditions to ensure precise conversion. If in doubt, consult an expert to ensure accuracy.
