Cemented Carbide-Steel Brazed Joint
Technically significant joint of wear-resistant cemented carbide with tough support steel using silver or base solders. Stress-compensating interlayers are often necessary.
Carbide cannot be welded to steel, only brazed. Carbide and steel have different thermal expansion rates, which causes stress during cooling. To absorb that, you place a thin intermediate layer of soft material between the parts, such as copper or a special foil. If you cool the part too quickly after brazing, the carbide will crack or the steel will distort. So let it cool slowly and do not quench it in water.
