Hastelloy Oxidation Boundary Layer

Hastelloy oxidation barrier layer forms at high temperatures as a dense chromium and molybdenum oxide layer on the surface, preventing oxygen and protecting the material.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

At high temperatures, Hastelloy reacts with oxygen to form a dense oxide layer of chromium and molybdenum. This layer is so dense that it prevents further oxygen ingress.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

The Hastelloy oxidation barrier layer protects the material from corrosion and increases its service life. However, it can be damaged by too rapid cooling or excessive oxygen content, which can affect the weld.

Workshop Practice & Action Guidelines

To obtain a strong Hastelloy oxidation barrier layer, ensure controlled cooling and low oxygen content in the weld pool. Use appropriate shielding and avoid rapid temperature changes during welding.
