Hastelloy stress corrosion cracking resistance

Hastelloy stress corrosion cracking resistance describes the ability of Hastelloys to prevent cracks under the influence of stresses and corrosive media. This is especially important in chemical and biological environments.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

Hastelloy's stress corrosion cracking resistance comes from its special composition, which contains high amounts of nickel and cobalt. This composition prevents cracks from spreading further under stress and corrosive media. This happens because corrosion damage stays localized and doesn't spread across the whole material.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

When welding Hastelloys, it's crucial to maintain high stress corrosion cracking resistance. Wrong welding parameters or poor cleaning can hurt that resistance and make cracks worse. This leads to shorter part life and higher corrosion risk.

Workshop Practice & Action Items

To keep high stress corrosion cracking resistance when welding Hastelloys, you absolutely must do the following:

• Use high-quality filler materials and processes.

• Make sure the base material is clean before welding.

• Keep welding parameters (temperature, voltage, time) under tight control.

• Use a suitable shielding or insulation to prevent corrosion damage.
