Tack weld arrangement

Tack weld bead arrangement is the deliberate placement and size of temporary short welds to fix the parts and control distortion during the main welding. This prevents shifting and improves weld quality.

Physical-chemical mechanism of action

The tack weld bead arrangement creates temporary connections between the parts that are melted during the main welding. These short welds keep the parts stable during the welding process and prevent shifting.

Metallurgical relevance & risks when welding

Wrong arrangement or size of the tack weld beads can lead to uneven connection, which results in cracks or inconsistencies in the weld seam. Too few or too large tack weld beads can impair the strength and appearance of the weld seam.

Workshop practice & action instructions

The tack weld beads should be arranged so that they control distortion during welding. A typical number is 1-2 tack weld beads per cm² of part cross-section. The size of the tack weld beads should be about 3-5 mm. Make sure the tack weld beads are straight and evenly distributed.
