Hot-profile microsegregation

The non-uniform distribution of alloying elements over short distances within a dendrite arm spacing caused by incomplete diffusion during solidification, which can be reduced via homogenization annealing.

Hot cracking microsegregation occurs during solidification when alloying elements are unevenly distributed and not properly mixed. This happens especially when you weld too hot and too slowly. The result is hard, brittle spots in the structure that can crack under load. If you have this problem, homogenization annealing after welding usually helps. The component is brought to a uniform temperature and held there until the elements have redistributed. The exact temperature and time depend on the material; if in doubt, check the data sheet.
