Auxiliary degreasing agent
Cleaning agents are volatile solvents used for pre-cleaning of parts to prevent hydrogen-induced porosity and stabilize the weld.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
Cleaning agents dissolve hydrocarbons on the part surface. These are then carried away by the solvent and removed, making the surface cleaner and preventing porosity.
Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding
Without degreasing, hydrocarbons can cause porosity during welding, which weakens the weld. These pores can also cause hot cracking and affect the strength of the joint. Effective degreasing ensures that parts are clean and allows a homogeneous weld.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
Use cleaning agents before welding to clean the part surfaces. Make sure all hydrocarbons are removed and the surface is dry. The amount applied depends on the material used, but typically a thin layer is used. Let the agent sit for at least 5 minutes before starting to weld.
