High-strength nickel-base flux-cored wire
High-strength nickel-based flux-cored wire is a filler metal for hot-work tool steels and Ni alloys that remains crack-resistant at cold or high temperatures.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
The nickel-based flux-cored wire contains high amounts of nickel and other stabilizing metals like cobalt. These additions improve the crystal structure and prevent the microstructure from drying out to glass-hard martensite, which would be crack-prone at high temperatures.
Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding
Using high-strength nickel-based flux-cored wire reduces susceptibility to hot cracking and improves weld strength, especially at high or cold temperatures. However, wrong wire selection can lead to insufficient joint strength.
Shop Practice & Instructions
Use high-strength nickel-based flux-cored wire for welding hot-work tool steels and Ni alloys when cryogenic or high service temperatures are expected. Pay attention to the correct wire diameter and suitable welding process (e.g., TIG welding) for optimal results.
