Homogenization

An annealing treatment at high temperatures to eliminate concentration gradients and segregations in the as-cast structure through thermally activated bulk diffusion. It optimizes the chemical uniformity of the material.

Homogenizing is a heat treatment you do before welding to make the structure uniform. The workpiece is heated to a high temperature and held there so that the alloying elements distribute evenly and segregations dissolve. This is especially important for cast parts, where the structure is often non-uniform. If you skip it, you risk stresses building up during welding and the part cracking. The exact temperature and holding time depend on the material; you need to look that up in the data sheet.
