Homogenization Annealing
A high-temperature thermal treatment designed to eliminate microscopic concentration gradients via volume diffusion. This achieves a uniform chemical distribution within the lattice.
You do homogenizing annealing when the structure after welding or casting is non-uniform – i.e. local hardness differences or structure states occur. You anneal the part at a high but material-specific temperature and hold it long enough for atomic diffusion to balance out the differences. The exact values depend on the material, so you have to check the data sheet. Afterwards, the structure is more uniform and subsequent processing steps run more stably.
