Hot-Dip Galvanizing

Process for applying a zinc coating by immersing cleaned steel into a bath of molten zinc, forming a tightly adherent intermetallic iron-zinc alloy layer.

In hot-dip galvanizing, the steel is dipped into a zinc bath. This forms a solid zinc-iron alloy layer that protects the steel from rust. If the bath isn't hot enough or the steel is left in too short, the layer becomes uneven and won't hold. Don't leave the steel in too long, or it can warp. Beforehand, you have to clean and degrease the workpiece, otherwise the zinc won't stick properly.
