Hot-Dip Galvanizing

Process for applying a zinc layer by immersing cleaned steel into a bath of molten zinc. An alloyed iron-zinc diffusion layer forms at the interface, adhering firmly to the base material.

Hot-dip galvanizing means: steel is dipped into molten zinc. This forms a zinc-iron alloy layer that protects the steel from rust. That stuff is tough, but when welding you have to be careful because the zinc layer burns off and gives off toxic fumes. Before welding, you grind off the zinc layer in the welding area, otherwise you'll get pores and weld defects. After welding, you can touch up the spot with zinc spray if you want to restore the corrosion protection.
