Pulse-Echo Ultrasonic Testing
The pulse-echo ultrasonic technique sends sound pulses into a material and measures the time for the echo to return. This allows precise location of internal defects.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
An ultrasonic pulse is sent into the material and reflected at every interface or inhomogeneity. The return echo time is measured to determine the depth of defects.
Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding
This technique accurately detects internal pores, cracks, and other material flaws. However, incorrect interpretation can lead to wrong defect localization, affecting quality assurance.
Workshop Practice & Action Instructions
Use high-quality ultrasonic devices with high resolution. Ensure that the couplant is applied correctly and that the sound waves can reach through the material undisturbed. Measurements should be performed by qualified technicians.
