Inconel hot cracking susceptibility
Inconel hot cracking susceptibility: nickel-based alloys are prone to cracking during welding, especially due to low-melting grain boundary films.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
Nickel-based alloys like Inconel contain eutectic grain boundary films that melt at low temperatures. These films can accumulate during welding and lead to cracking.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
The susceptibility to hot cracking can cause stress buildup in the weld metal, resulting in visible or microscopic cracks. This compromises the mechanical strength and lifespan of the part.
Shop Practice & Action Items
To minimize hot cracking susceptibility, clean the weld area thoroughly before welding. Use a high melting temperature and a long cooling period (t8/5 > 25 s) to coarsen the grain structure and reduce stresses.
