Inconel Weld Hot Cracking Susceptibility

The tendency of nickel-base weld metals to crack during solidification due to low-melting eutectic films at grain boundaries, which is counteracted by adjusted filler metals and low heat input.

With Inconel and other nickel-based alloys, you have to be careful not to get hot cracks. This happens when the melt builds up too much stress during solidification and the grain boundaries are still weak. It's important to keep the heat input low and not stay in one spot too long. Use a suitable filler material that matches the alloy, then it alloys cleanly and doesn't crack as quickly. If the weld gets too hot and cools slowly, you'll have problems quickly.
