Inconel Grain Microstructure Stability
The resistance of the austenitic nickel-chromium matrix against undesired phase precipitations during long-term thermal exposure at elevated temperatures. This prevents component embrittlement during service.
Inconel is a nickel-based high-temperature material, not a classic austenite like steel. The statements about martensite or copper phases are simply wrong – the stuff has an austenitic matrix that remains stable even when cooling. The main problem when welding is the heat input: Too much heat causes grain growth and reduces strength. You have to keep the interpass temperature low and dose the heat properly, then you stay on the safe side.
