Inconel grain boundary precipitation
The targeted precipitation of carbides or intermetallic phases along grain boundaries in nickel-based superalloys, controlled through thermal aging to optimize high-temperature creep strength and resistance to intergranular deformation.
Inconel and similar nickel-based alloys often involve precipitation at grain boundaries during welding. This can be used deliberately to improve high-temperature strength. But be careful: if it happens uncontrolled, e.g., due to too much heat input during welding, the material becomes hard and brittle, and cracks can occur. So you have to control heat input and cooling. If you heat-treat the parts after welding, you can set the precipitations deliberately. But don't rely on any fixed numbers; it strongly depends on the exact alloy and component. Stick to the data sheet specs or ask the foreman if unsure.
