Inconel Oxidation Resistance

The ability of nickel-chromium alloys to form a dense, adherent chromium oxide layer at high service temperatures, protecting the base material from further oxygen attack. This predestines them for turbine construction.

Inconel is a nickel-chromium alloy that forms a protective chromium oxide layer when heated. You have to keep an eye on this when welding, because if you overheat the alloy too much or neglect the shielding zone, the layer breaks down and the material can corrode or become hot-cracked. So ensure a clean, grease-free surface and keep the heat input within limits. If you treat the weld after welding, make sure you don't unnecessarily remove the oxide layer, otherwise it will reform.
