Inconel weld metal solidification
Inconel weld metal solidification is a controlled austenitic transformation in nickel-based fillers that uses trace elements to prevent hot cracking.
Physico-chemical Mechanism of Action
Inconel weld metal solidification is based on controlled austenitic transformation. Nickel-based fillers contain trace elements like titanium and aluminum that form low-energy grain boundary films. These films stop martensite from forming, and that prevents hot cracks.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
If solidification isn't controlled, martensite can form, leading to hot cracks. Using Inconel weld metal increases strength and toughness without cracking.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
Use Inconel weld metal at high temperatures and controlled cooling rates. Cooling time should be between 5 and 20 seconds to get proper solidification. If you cool too fast, martensite forms and causes hot cracks.
