Inconel Heat Treatment Precipitation Hardening

The controlled aging of nickel-base alloys to form coherent intermetallics, resulting in a significant increase in strength at high operating temperatures.

Precipitation hardening in Inconel is an aging treatment where you deliberately form fine particles in the structure. This makes the material stronger and more stable for high temperatures. When welding, you need to control the heat input carefully, otherwise you lose strength in the heat-affected zone. If you want to harden the parts after welding, you have to hit the right annealing temperature and hold it long enough, then let it cool slowly. A clean, steady process is essential, otherwise you get cracks or the material becomes brittle.
