Induction Hardening Edge Overheating

Induction hardening edge overheating: Magnetic field lines concentrate at edges and cause local overheating. Avoid by using special inductor geometries.

Physical-Chemical Working Mechanism

The magnetic field lines of an induction welding machine concentrate at the edges of the weld joint. This concentration causes local overheating of the surrounding material.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

Local overheating can change the structure in the edge areas, leading to grain growth and possible cracks. It increases the hardness of the edges, which affects mechanical load capacity.

Workshop Practice & Action Items

Use special inductor geometries to minimize edge overheating. Keep the field lines as far away from the weld joint as possible. Monitor the temperature and cool the area carefully.
