Industrial Fluoroscopic Testing

Industrial fluoroscopy testing is an imaging method using continuous X-ray and a fluorescent screen or digital sensor that allows fast visual inspection of mass-produced parts for internal flaws.

Physical and Chemical Mechanism

Industrial fluoroscopy uses X-rays or gamma rays to look through materials. These rays are absorbed inside the part being tested and transmitted to the fluorescent screen or digital sensor. The screen then glows according to the material density, producing a visible image of the internal structure.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

Fluoroscopy is especially important in weld testing because it reveals internal defects like cracks, pores, or wrong weld seam positions. Misinterpreted images can lead to misunderstandings and cause potential problems to be overlooked. Therefore, proper setup and interpretation are essential.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

• Set Up Equipment: Make sure the fluoroscopy unit is properly calibrated and the X-ray emission is set to the right energy level.

• Prepare Material: Remove any metal parts or protective layers that could block the view.

• Image Capture: Position the part between the X-ray source and the sensor. Move it slowly through the beam area to get detailed images.

• Interpretation: Carefully analyze the images for internal flaws. Use special software to aid interpretation if available.
