Inert gas shroud

A protective gas cover consisting of unreactive gases such as argon or helium that completely shields the molten pool from atmospheric contamination.

The shielding gas (argon or helium) settles over the weld pool and displaces the air. This keeps oxygen and moisture away, which would otherwise cause pores and oxides in the weld. If the gas flow is too low or draft blows the gas away, you'll immediately get contamination and a bad weld. Make sure the gas amount is right and the torch is guided cleanly over the melt.
