Incubation Microstructure of Decarburization

The incubation structure of decarburization is an area near the edge where carbon diffuses out of the matrix and the local hardness decreases. This affects wear resistance.

Physicochemical mechanism of action

Near the weld edge, carbon decarburizes from the metal and diffuses into the surroundings. This causes local matrix depletion, which reduces hardness.

Metallurgical relevance & risks during welding

The hardness reduction in the incubation structure can lead to increased wear and cracking. Incorrect cooling steps can speed up or slow down this process, affecting overall strength.

Workshop practice & instructions

To control the incubation structure, pay attention to the correct cooling steps. Avoid rapid cooling near the edge, as it can lead to depletion. For higher-hardness steels, slow and uniform cooling is required.
