Incubation Period of Pearlite Formation

The time delay at constant undercooling before initial pearlite nuclei form at the austenite grain boundaries.

The incubation period is the time the microstructure needs to start forming pearlite after dropping below the transformation temperature. In welding, this matters because the cooling rate of the weld determines whether the transformation runs cleanly or not. If you cool too fast, the austenite just stalls and you get hard, brittle microstructure instead of pearlite. If you cool too slow, the grain gets coarse and toughness suffers. So you have to manage the cooling so the transformation runs in a controlled way – you do that through heat input and preheating, not through the shielding gas.
