Gamma ray source

An isotope source is a radioactive source that emits high-energy gamma radiation. It is used for material testing to radiograph thick-walled welds in a mobile manner without electrical power.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

An isotope source generates high-energy gamma radiation through the radioactive decay of isotopes such as cobalt-60. This radiation has high penetration and can penetrate thick materials without a power supply.

Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding

Gamma radiation can be used to inspect the density and structure of materials. Improper handling or excessive exposure can be dangerous and damage human tissue. Therefore, safety measures like protective clothing and dose limits are essential.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

Use the isotope source in a protected environment with appropriate safety measures. Ensure the source is not active longer than necessary and carry out regular dose checks. Wear proper protective clothing and equipment to minimize radiation risk.
