Yoke Magnetization

Yoke magnetization generates a local magnetic field in a test piece using an electromagnet or permanent magnet. It is used for magnetic particle testing and for targeted excitation of flux leakage cracks.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

Yoke magnetization uses an electromagnet or permanent magnet to create a strong magnetic field in a specific area of the test piece. This leads to the excitation of flux leakage cracks in the material.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

Yoke magnetization is particularly important for magnetic particle testing because it generates targeted flux leakage cracks. These cracks can then be revealed by the powder and a magnetic field. Incorrect magnet settings can lead to inaccurate results or excessive excitation, affecting the test.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

Use an electromagnet with a fixed yoke for targeted magnetization. Ensure the magnet is placed near the area to be tested and a constant current is achieved. The duration of excitation should be between 10 and 30 seconds, depending on the material and the desired crack density. Regularly check the magnetization settings to obtain precise results.
