Yoke Magnetization
Yoke magnetization is a magnetic particle testing method where a yoke is magnetized and the magnetic field is applied to a component. It is used for targeted inspection of weld or surface areas for cracks or defects.
Physico-Chemical Mechanism of Action
A yoke consists of two magnetic poles that generate a local magnetic field between them. This field is applied to the component and can reveal cracks or surface flaws by attracting the powder particles.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
Yoke magnetization is especially useful for inspecting weld areas and surfaces. It can detect cracks, deformations, or lack of weld volume. However, incorrect application or insufficient magnetic field strength can cause small defects to go unseen or be misinterpreted.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
To perform yoke magnetization successfully, the component should be clean and dry. The yoke should be positioned to fully cover the area to be tested. The magnetic field strength should be adjusted according to the material type and the size of the area being inspected. If results are unclear, additional testing methods such as ultrasonic testing should be used.
