Cold Metal Transfer Welding Thermal Decoupling
Thermal decoupling in the CMT process is based on reducing the average welding current during droplet detachment, which temporarily cools the weld pool. This characteristic prevents burn-through in extremely thin sheets and reduces thermal distortion.
CMT is a process where the wire is mechanically retracted while the current drops. This causes the droplet to detach almost current-free and the weld pool cools briefly. That's exactly what you use when joining thin sheets without the material burning through or the sheet warping badly. You simply adjust this via the CMT characteristic on the machine, which controls the short circuit and wire feed accordingly. Best to try the setting on a scrap piece until the weld looks clean and the back stays cool.
