Excessive weld reinforcement

Edge build-up is an excessive accumulation of weld metal on the surface, leading to poor notch effect and exceeding material usage.

Physicochemical Mechanism of Action

Edge build-up occurs due to uneven workpiece deformation during welding. The weld metal collects at the edges, forming excessive mounds, which impairs the notch effect.

Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding

Excessive edge build-up can cause increased stress concentration, leading to cracks and hot cracking. It can also impair the mechanical properties of the weld and reduce component life.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

To avoid edge build-up, ensure even workpiece deformation. Keep welding speed constant and use suitable shielding gas. For heavy materials or high stress, it may help to coarsen or smooth the workpiece before welding.
