Edge Distortion Defect

Edge deformation errors occur due to uneven heat input at the joint edges during welding, leading to irregular shapes.

Physical-chemical mechanism of action

Uneven heat input at the joint edges leads to different stresses and strains in various areas of the weld. This causes local distortion and unevenness.

Metallurgical relevance & risks in welding

Edge distortion defects can lead to uneven stress distribution, cracks, or fracturing in the joint. They impair the mechanical properties and service life of the weld.

Workshop practice & instructions

To avoid edge distortion defects, ensure symmetric heat input. This can be achieved by proper joint edge preparation and uniform welding currents. Use suitable shielding or insulation at the edges to regulate the temperature distribution.
