Linear misalignment
Edge misalignment between plate edges causes uneven force distribution and increases bending in the weld under load.
Physical-chemical mechanism of action
Edge misalignment causes uneven stress distribution at the plate edge. This leads to local stress peaks and can cause cracks or damage in the weld area.
Metallurgical relevance & risks in welding
Edge misalignment increases stress in the weld, raising the risk of cracks and fracturing. It can also lead to uneven strength and a lack of proper mechanical bonding.
Workshop practice & instructions
Ensure that the plate edges are flat and straight before welding. Edge misalignment should not exceed 0.5 mm. If necessary, use an edge alignment machine or fine tool to remove the offset.
